What's on in our Parks:

Gardening Working Parties have concluded for this year in Alexandra Recreation Ground. Thanks to all who participated. We will resume in early Spring.

The last Bulb Planting session in Alexandra Recreation Ground will take place on Saturday November 12th at 10.00am. Please bring a trowel, gloves and kneeling mat. We meet by the fountain.

Times and dates for Bulb Planting sessions in Cator Park will be announced.

This year we planted - on Saturday November 5th - 500 February Gold daffodils and some wild primroses along the Pool riverbank and look forward to seeing them bloom in early Spring.

The third Annual General Meeting was on Thursday November 3rd at 7.30pm in Holy Trinity Centre, Lennard Road, Penge. Kathy Bance, MBE,  was our guest speaker.

Music in the Park
on Sunday July 24th at 3.00pm in Alexandra Recreation Ground with the Singology Choir from Sydenham was a great success and we were blessed with fine weather.

Installation of new park signs in both parks has now taken place, as well as new park seating and picnic benches.

New slide and 'pirate ship' in the children's play area in Alexandra Recreation Ground has taken the place of the much-loved older slide which, sadly, no longer complied with the new healthy and safety regulations.

Fifty new shrubs were planted in shrub borders in Cator Park.

The paddling pool has been repaired and should be up and running in the summer months.

BIRWALK

Philip Davies led the Bird Walk on Sunday afternoon May 15th, starting  in Cator Park, taking in the Pool river bank and ending in Alexandra Recreation Ground. We saw the kingfisher, a heron, ducks, moorhens, parakeets and a wren.

CAROLS IN THE PARK

A History

For the first time (in 2008) friends and local residents were invited to sing carols, accompanied by the Crystal Palace Brass Band ‘B’ section, in the recreation ground on the Sunday afternoon of December 14 from 3.00 to 4.00pm. We met near the fountain and over 200 people joined in the singing. A small tree was illuminated for the occasion and someone brought solar lamps which gave a festive glow. Carol sheets were provided.  Afterwards we went back to Holy Trinity Centre for mulled wine and hot mince pies. The next year (2009) we planned to do the same again but with roast chestnuts added in!   And we did, in bitterly cold weather on Sunday,  December 13th at 3.00pm, with a similarly large group of full-throated singers and then we all went back to the Centre for the mulled wine, mince pies etc, etc, and a further seasonal offering from the Crystal Palace Brass Band 'B'. This was repeated with similar success on December 12th, 2010 in milder weather with the renamed 'Progress Band'. We thank all who those helped in any way to make these community events so enjoyable and congratulations to those who won raffle prizes!

This year - 2011 - on Sunday December 11th we will be selling our own specially-designed Christmas cards with views of the parks. Please note the Carols event takes place at 2.30pm.
